Overseeding Services

Does your lawn have bare or thin spots? Overseeding is a simple yet powerful way to restore density and bring your lawn back to life.

Restore, Strengthen, and Revitalize Your Lawn

A lush, thick lawn doesn’t happen by accident. Over time, grass can thin out due to environmental stress, foot traffic, disease, and weather conditions. Overseeding is a crucial lawn care practice that introduces new grass seed into your existing lawn to improve density, enhance color, and boost resistance to weeds and disease. At Heartland Grounds, we provide professional overseeding services to help your lawn thrive year after year.

Overseeding is an extremely valuable practice to improve the health of your lawn. Here’s why it’s essential:

  • Thicker, Healthier Grass – Overseeding reduces bare spots and improves overall turf density.

  • Weed Suppression – A thick lawn blocks small weeds from getting the sunlight and nutrients they need to get established, naturally crowding out weeds and reducing the need for herbicides.

  • Disease & Drought Resistance – The grass in your yard may not have been planted strategically. There are specific grass varieties that are often more resistant to disease and require less water. Overseeding with these seeds will help your lawn resilience.

  • Improved Lawn Aesthetics – Overseeding enhances color, texture, and uniformity for a beautiful yard.

Why Overseeding Matters

It can be tempting to try to fix thin spots in your lawn in the spring when everything is turning green. However, the best time to overseed in Iowa is early fall around late August to early October. During the fall, soil temperatures are still warm, but air temperatures are cooler, creating ideal conditions for seed germination.

Spring overseeding is possible, but there are challenges. Applying a pre-emergent weed control treatment would interfere with grass germination, so to overseed in the spring, grass has to compete with weeds on its own. Also, new grass won't be fully established by the arrival of summer heat, which presents another challenge. While spring overseeding can be successful with proper watering and fertilization, the conditions are generally less favorable.
